3 Terms You Need to Know if You Are Looking to Lose Weight

Glycemic index

is a number representing the rise in blood glucose level after a certain food has been consumed compared to pure glucose which is 100 on the GI scale. It is a way to distinguish between fast acting carbs and slower acting carbs.


Glycemic load

is the number that is associated with the amount of carbohydrates in a food times the glycemic index of the food. If you eat a little bit of watermelon which is very high glycemic index you won’t raise your blood sugar too much due to the lack of amount you ate. On a side note, your blood can only hold a few teaspoons of sugar at once.


If you eat slow carb foods like spinach, kale, asparagus, cauliflower, cucumbers, broccoli, tomatoes, and onions, it won’t increase your blood sugar level very much due to a low glycemic index.


Insulin index

is the number representing the increase in insulin within a two-hour period after a food has been eaten. Obviously, lots of foods that have a high glycemic index are going to increase insulin a lot. However, certain foods that don’t have that high of a glycemic index spike insulin anyway such as dairy. This means the insulin index can be a more important number than glycemic index when it comes to weight loss.


Insulin index is probably the most important of the three because the more you increase your insulin the more you are storing calories in cells.  If your muscles don’t need energy because they are full then the calories get stored as fat.
