The single easiest and most effective thing I can get my clients to do for any health or fitness goal is take Omega 3’s.  Compliance tends to be difficult. I try to get them to look up the benefits as to get them motivated to take them and hopefully compliance improves.  They always come back to me with a huge list of diseases that are prevented by omega 3's and that’s about as far as that goes.  They definitely prevent diseases but here are some more really important reasons to take them.

1.      They reduce cortisol.  Why is this important? Cortisol is the stress hormone.  The number one thing I do as a personal trainer is reduce stress.  Stress has gotten to be the biggest health problem in our society today and the number one obstacle people face in their fitness goals. Cortisol also retains fat around the belly.  There are other ways to reduce cortisol and they should be implemented, but omega 3’s is the easiest way.

2.      They enable your body to use fats as building blocks of the body and use fat as energy.  Without omega 3's your body just stores fat or excretes it if you’re lucky.

3.      They are the third highest ranking legal ergogenic aid (performance enhancer). In other words you will perform like shit without them.  The number one legal ergogenic aid is water, the number two is carbohydrates. Just like water your body needs omega 3’s.  Without any water your body goes on a fast and steady decline and same with omega 3’s. Essential means they are necessary to ingest because your body will not produce them.

4. They are a natural anti-inflammatory. The reason this is so important is due to high amounts of inflammation our food and water typically causes along with all the toxins in the environment. Anybody want to reduce their pain in their joints, muscles, or back?

5. If you need another reason to take them, then yes, they help prevent pretty much every disease there is known to man and help with whatever ails you. Asking for the benefits of omega 3's is similar to asking what the benefits of water is.

There is no upper limit of omega 3’s. That’s like saying there’s an upper limit of how much saturated fat (meat fat), you can eat. You can eat as much as you want; you’ll never overdose.  You might gain weight and be unhealthy, but you won’t overdose. With Omega 3's you want a healthy balance of omega 3's and omega 6's. We already get a lot of omega 6's in our diet which makes an omega 3 supplement important. I have seen doctors recommend 2000-3000 mg per day.
