I was talking to a nutritionist as I like to do; I will see eye to eye with a nutritionist if they keep up to date with their information. The nutritionist I was talking to told me she was able to get rid of her asthma through diet. I thought that was awesome so I asked her how exactly she did it. I wasn’t surprised when she said she eliminated dairy products and it went away. This isn’t anything unusual. Dairy is a very common allergen that causes a lot of people various issues. Here are my top 10 reasons why dairy products are bad for you. Feel free to contact me with any questions and comments below.

Back in the day the best pre-workout and post-workout were pretty straight forward. We used carbohydrates for energy and would bring fast acting carbs in the form of sugar to the gym to get us through the workout. That was in the days before the ketogenic diet craze. Now pre-workout and post-workout are a little more complicated. Some people do really well burning fats for energy and others don’t.
The single easiest and most effective thing I can get my clients to do for any health or fitness goal is to take a multivitamin and omega 3 fatty acids. I get clients to look up the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids for motivation to take them and they always come back to me with a huge list of diseases that are prevented by omega-3 fats. They definitely prevent diseases but here are some more really important reasons to take them.
People are hearing the term goitrogens and are worried about eating cruciferous vegetables. What a mistake. Cruciferous vegetables are so high in nutrients. Don’t skip out on these super foods because you are worried about your metabolism. Let me explain what goitrogens are, how they effect your metabolism and some steps needed to optimize your metabolism.
OMG that was crazy! Why would I do such a thing??? I’ll tell you why… the health benefits are huge! And experts keep discovering more benefits. There’s a right way and a wrong way of doing a fast of course. I’ll go over the benefits and the right way to do it but first I am reminded of a story about the doctor that discovered bacteria on hands. I am reminded of this story because there are a lot of people that will think fasting is crazy. And it is in a way. I’ll get into that too.
This week I just wanted to share my 5 minutes of fame with you. I think I'm pretty famous now. I've had people recognize me from television since I've been on CTV. It was fun to do. They put you in what they call the green room first. I don't know why they call it the green room. Cory came in and had a little chat with me about what I wanted to talk about and made me feel comfortable. He is really easy to talk to. He then grabbed me a few minutes before the segment and showed me where to stand. It was pretty cool being on the set. A girl did her segment then it switched to Cory who did weather in front of the green screen and then it switched to me. Cory came over and stood beside me. Here's what happened next:

The other day I got together with a doctor from the University of Alberta and had a great conversation. I love the opportunity to talk to brilliant educated people. I always learn a lot in a short period of time. We talked a lot about different studies and the shadiness of getting studies done to prove your side of the argument. She talked about Tim Caulfield who debunks beliefs in science and shows how you can find obscure correlations and evidence in studies to prove your argument no matter what your argument might be. I’ll come back to this point; remember the name Tim Caulfield.
Clients always ask me if they should take BCAAs. My answer is usually yes. Then they want to know what kind to take. Before I get into any of that, do you know why you might want to take BCAAs? Let me explain what they are and why you might want to take them.
I have boycotted whey protein for years now. I am discovering this might be the wrong thing to do. Back in the day I used to use whey protein isolate. Isolate means they took almost all the fat out of the milk and it has a higher percentage of protein. Whey was the way to go for bodybuilding because it was a complete protein and had all 9 or I think in those days it was only 8 essential amino acids. Essential meaning our bodies don’t produce them and we have to take them in with diet.
Last week I wrote an article talking about how 50% of articles written are 100% bullshit. I didn’t mention in that article how many studies are also crap. I have heard about half the studies are also skewed to prove a product. One of my clients is a pediatrician who studied this exact topic while getting her PhD. When I asked her what percentage of studies are false, all she said was, "A lot." and chuckled.
Let me start with a little background info first. I am a personal trainer and I have had abs most of my life give or take a time or 2. Recently, I have been eating out a lot and drinking more than usual. I now make my own wine and my house is stocked with wine and cider and leftover beverages from new year's eve. My abs went away over the last 6 months and now it’s time to get them back.
I hate to say it but your doctor isn’t going to take good care of you. They will do their job to keep you alive and feeling ok and some of them will put in the extra effort to do a good job. They will not keep you at optimum health; that costs money. It’s not a concern if you are overweight and they will likely think you just need to stay away from the cheeseburgers or something. Your doctor isn’t going to tell you the stuff I’m about to tell you here.
I just wanted to share my 4 minutes of fame with you. I was super nervous but I had my friend Craig helping me stay calm on the set. It was actually a lot of fun to do. My words didn't come out the way I wanted but that's to be expected. Kent said it went well and he is sure he will have me back on. Thank you Craig for getting me on the show and I am looking forward to doing it again.
I am 33 years old and I am morbidly obese. I was in Mexico with my best friend for his wedding when I had my aha moment. I decided at that point that I needed to change my life. I had found Travis on Kijiji and at the time I didn't know why but something drew me to him. I went for a consult with Travis and I haven't looked back since. I have been training with Travis since August and I have currently dropped about 50 lb's and I feel fantastic. I couldn't have done this without Travis’ support and direction. I am proud not only to call Travis my trainer, but also my friend.
If you haven’t heard of Dr. Mercola yet, then let me introduce you. Dr. Joseph Mercola is highly respected in the functional medicine world. Functional medicine is where they look at the root cause of medical issues and try to fix the root cause of something. One analogy is “Do you have anxiety because you have a lack of Ativan in your body?” Instead of giving you a prescription, which they might do for immediate alleviation of symptoms, they want to find out what is causing the anxiety and then fix that problem.
My number one recommendation is to use food to get as much nutrient as possible. Eat as nutrient rich foods as possible. Always take the broccoli and spinach over the french-fries and ketchup.
It’s really simple and I’m not going to make it complicated. You need to get at least 75% of your calories from fats. You might have to weigh your food at first. There are 4 calories per gram of carbohydrates or sugars and proteins. There are 9 calories per gram of fat. Alcohol is not included in this diet, but there are 7 calories per gram of alcohol.
There’s a couple summits coming up that I feel are particularly important to mention. The Thyroid Summit is coming up and so is The Fat Summit. They are related in some ways and I’m sure there will be some of the same speakers at both.
